Dr Kalam: The level-headed President of India

Among the cacophony of dissenting voices in Indian politics is one leading man who speaks with sincerity, and more importantly, practicality. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam has to be one of the most focused presidents we have ever had. If you notice, he always takes up issues which are actually important. Like other politicians, he doesn't complain about the country going to the dogs and doesn't promise to make it Singapore or Tokyo - he simply offers a solution. Practical man that he is, President Kalam never takes up a problem without also offering a solution.

A scientific man with a humanitarian heart, he has often pointed out that research and development is essential for the economic health of India. As reported in The Indian Express, he spoke about taking technology to the grass roots - to the people who really need it. Basic things like nutritious food and clean water are where we should start, rightly, according to him. And mind you, he is not unaware of the policital mindset of the others in his fraternity, as he was quoted in the same article:

There are two kinds of politics — developmental and political. I tell the politicians to practice developmental politics 70 per cent of the times and the remaining time they can indulge in political politics.
Unfortunately, the office of the President of India, as we all know, is rather limited. 'Mainstream' politicians obviously don't share his vision.

President Kalam has also highlighted the lack of sufficient legal protection to children in India, the importance of external audit for our defence research and independent decision-making for IAS officers. It is impressive to see our President, in all humility, speaking from his heart - laptop in hand, Powerpoint presentation on the screen - truly impressive.

Further, he has proved to be the president of the common man. Today, I read about how he paid a surprise visit to a local military hospital to call upon an injured Field Marshal. If that's not a People's President, I don't know who is.

A lot can be said about President Kalam, but I am ill-equipped for the task - there is so much to say. Dr. Kalam's term in office ends in July 2007. I duly hope he gets a second term. Even otherwise, I am sure he will continue winning the hearts of people.

your words are flattering indeed. I work for a newspapers (ET) but hardly write for its travel section. Did a bit of pen-pushing in early days of journalism and during a travel section of Encyclopaedia Britannica; some pieces slipped on the Net too. But now I prefer to write for this recently-started blog or in my long mails to friends.
your occupation mentions 'writer'. that is quite a dreamy job. you a pro?

I am personally so much impressed and emotionally attached with his personality, water came to me eye when I finished reading your blog on him.

I can give all my life on his slightest indication and furthermore, I promise him that,

I will never bring disgrace on this our country by an act of dishonesty or cowardice.

I will fight for the ideals and Sacred Things of the country both alone and of course with my close friends who share my view point.

I will revere and obey the country’s laws, and will do my best to incite a like reverence and respect in those above us who are prone to annul them or set them at naught.

I will strive increasingly to quicken the public's sense of civic duty.

Thus by doing all this, I will transmit this country, not only not less, but greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to me.

If anyone who agrees with me should also make some promises with him/herself (not to anyone else) in the interest of the nation.

He's awesome. I have the deepest regard for him. Ever since I read about Rameshwaram, his hometown, in his Wings of Fire, I've been wanting to visit that little island. Some day I will go see the milieu (however altered it maybe from his days) which produced a great man.

we all wish him a second term, but with the kind of politics we have, its dificult.we all should start a kind of campaign and compel them to nominate him for the top post.

Tell me what you think about this post!
