Countdown to Two: Part 2

Little Dude is 22 months old today, and here I am here with part 2 of
Countdown to Two - a four-part series, posted every month until his second birthday in October. The first part was about what happened from birth to six months. This part is a look back at the time he was six months to a year old.

Memorable Moments

  • The time when he eagerly had his first solid food - mashed banana. I've still kept his first sippy cup because I can't bear to part with it!
  • Moving from a newborn bath tub to a baby one where he loved to splash.
  • His first trip to the playground where he loved watching other children and sitting in the toddler swing (he was too little for it!).
  • Reading to him every night, while he pointed at the pictures.
  • His first attempt to stand up, and he succeeded.
  • He never crawled but scooted around in the cutest way!
  • The first birthday party.
The first swing ride!

Biggest Challenges

  • Sleep disturbances started happening, and around the nine-month mark, he was waking up and crying way too often. There was nothing wrong with him, but it was a period of major sleep deprivation.
  • First foods are always challenging, and I made a some mistakes which led to problems (I collated my months of research into this post on starting solids).
  • Separation anxiety was at it's peak and he would not leave me for a minute. I thought this would never end, and it didn't help that I had my separation anxiety too!

Lessons Learnt

  • Take it slow with the first foods and research very well before offering anything new to your baby.
  • Don't expect your baby to sleep through the night after six months. Sometimes, they just want you around.
  • Many babies don't crawl or have their first tooth by their first birthday. As long as they are moving around and happy, it's okay.
  • Even if they don't show a willingness to play with other babies, take them out so they can see other kids and people. You don't have to go on playdates.
  • Give your baby enough opportunities to explore, or they will feel frustrated. Don't stop them from discovering new things - just step back and keep an eye.

How did your first year with your baby go? What do you treasure the most about that time?

I wish we'd spent more time at home, but I got us into a hectic routine very early because I was sick of being couped up inside after a c section.Made a lot of new friends that way though.

It's a good thing that you did! I just didn't feel motivated enough, though.

Lovely post, my son is 21 months old, so I read this post with interest!

Erica - I did the same thing, for the same reasons with the same outcome! LOL

I wish I'd done this, some of it is a bit blurry now, not the milestones as such, but exactly when they happened! I look forward to the next instalment :) #PoCoLo

I love this concept of counting down to 2! I have a hard time remembering exactly when things happened too, and then I feel bad when my friend who also has twin girls asks me for advice or something.

Ah, that's okay. No mom ever forgets the special moments and you really don't have to remember the calendar date!

Tell me what you think about this post!
