Ten distractions that every Mom needs

I need a break! How many times does this thought come into your head every day? You may have even said it out loud. But a mother's job is never done, so a break seems like something that only happens in fairy tales (the same one you've read a million times). So, what do we do? We make do with the little distractions that keep us sane. Because we need our minds in the right place - to function when we are expected to be up at 4 a.m., or when we have to deal with a barrage of unexpected questions from a curious child.

So, moms, if you have these distractions in your life, don't feel guilty one bit. If you don't, drop what you're doing and go get some chocolate!

ten distractions that moms need

1. Mug of hot tea/coffee

My mind doesn't even start working until I get my first cuppa in the morning. So, this is first on my list. A mug (or two) of hot liquid is just what you need to prepare yourself for an onslaught of dirty diapers, spilled juice, and bruised knees.

2. Chocolate

I'm not promoting unhealthy eating habits, but c'mon, who doesn't agree that chocolate is a mood-lifter? When you are having a bar, doesn't everything else kind of fade into the background? I know I always keep some handy for when I need it most.

3. A gossip friend

This is that wonderful friend you can call or text when something interesting happens, or who fills you in on what everybody was up to while you were busy doing the laundry. She's guaranteed to give you some laughs, and that's why you need her in your life!

4. A lively Facebook group

Whether it's a group from where you live, or an activity you do, or a philosophy you embrace, a good Facebook group is essential for moms. It's not easy to find one, but once you do, you know it is a place where you can share your thoughts or rants without fear, and get to know about what happening outside your chaotic home.

5. Exercise

Don't cringe! You don't have to join a gym (thumbs up if you do!), but you must get those muscles moving. It's scientifically proven that even seven minutes of exercise can make you feel better. Walking, yoga, and meditation can work wonder's for your tired body. You need it!

6. Fictional entertainment

Resort to good ol' escapism to get your to-do list out of your mind. Every mom should be allowed to end her day with an episode of {insert crazy fictional drama show} to unwind. Or maybe, a book can do that job for you. It's a great way to get your head to a different place!

7. Shopping

Retail therapy is just not the same after parenthood, but it's still good therapy! I'm not talking about grocery shopping, but even if you go out to buy a pair of socks for school, it can be refreshing to head out of the house. Bonus: you can stop for an extra cup of coffee!

8. A shower

Nothing quite drowns out the sounds of kids whining than the shower, does it?! Yup, for those five minutes, you may as well be cruising down the Nile River. Grab that shower when you can, ladies, it's probably keeping you together!

9. An interesting hobby

Whether it's gardening or writing or baking, choose what you like to do, and do it. Take that time to pursue an interest that will make you feel worthwhile. Don't worry about finding time for it. When you commit to do something, time expands to accommodate it.

10. A mini-vacation

This distraction is harder to come by, but if you can get out even for an hour every couple of days, do it! You can always do lunch with a friend, or a mani-pedi, or even a long drive. Don't wait for a family vacation (which can actually be a hard job in itself) for some time out!

I thought that sanity went by the wayside when I became a mom...then a single mom. Two kids that are at the age where they think they "know it all and can do it better than mom". Love your top ten, from a cup o' joe to a mini vacation! Another trick to keeping my sanity is putting on some music, turning up the volume and LOCKING the door :) Great top ten for all moms out there! :) ~ Audrey

The first one always works for me. I NEED that time of the day when I sit relaxed and enjoy my hot mug (yes, mug, I drink that much!) of ginger-cardamom tea. :) Loved this post

Thanks,Faiza. I have a big mug of tea every morning too!

I love the spin you put on this, Tarana ... and your list of distractions. I always start my day with a cup of tea (or two) and browse Facebook and my email while leisurely drinking it. It's a favorite time of day for me - and a distraction that I dearly love and need. Your list was a great read! Thanks for sharing it. :)

I "may" be addicted to tea and dark chocolate. They keep me sane. And thank goodness for my online peeps!

Great list! Just off for a shower now.....

What a great list and you're so right on all of them. When I'm showering I tend to have music on too, I can transport myself to anywhere and it's a fantastic break, even if it's only 5 minutes.

Great post! I always have a tv series on the go, it's great to get absorbed in and forget everything else for an hour :)

Excellent list there. There is nothing like a good movie and a good chat with a friend. I would add "a long holiday" as number 11 ;)

YES! I forget about myself often throughout the day, and this list of distractions is great. And combining some of these? Sheer genius!

Totally agree, especially with the fiction point. I have a couple of blogs that whenever I just need five minutes, pop on and read as they always make me laugh. Great post #pocolo

perfect activities to make a mom feel sane again. loved reading through. My favourite would be getting to watch a movie or read a chapter of a book, a big mug of cardamom tea.... and sometimes cooking at a slow pace ..you know when you're not in a hurry and get to smell and taste the dish at every step while preparing it...

Michelle Nahom said...
