Toddler Tales (27): Big Boy

Toddler Tales on Sand In My Toes
I knew that one day, Little Dude would protest being called a baby - but just not this soon! It started a couple of weeks ago, and he will not be called a baby, or anything similar. Incidentally, he turned two and a half this month and it's been a month of milestones all the way!

His vocabulary is getting more diverse, and he can handle sentences with ease, in both our languages. He loves using new words and asks us questions all the time. Once he discovers new things (his current favourite is the 'gas van' which delivers LPG cylinders!), he talks about it non-stop.

The biggest surprise has been his willingness to sleep on his own. Actually, I'm right beside him, but I used to rock or sing to him to sleep. One day, he said he wanted to sleep himself, and I couldn't believe it! Of course, I had to sit next to him, but for me, this is a big step. I think it has something to do with him watching his favoutite TV shows like Sid The Science Kid in which the characters go to bed on their own.

Celebrating the big boy
We are also progressing well with potty training, which I haven't mentioned before because I didn't want to jinx it! Apart from a few initial hitches, he's grasped the concept of using the potty well, and there are fewer accidents.

To reward him for this, I told him we would celebrate him becoming a 'big boy' by cutting a cake, since his birthday is still far ahead. I wanted to mark his new milestones, and he loves cakes. Of course, he wanted a strawberry cake, and we blew two candles on it, and sang 'Happy Birthday' to the big boy! He's delighted, and does not lose any opportunity to remind us that he is a big boy now - from sitting on the chair on his own, and having his food.

I can't believe we're already at this stage. But I've always had the belief that kids develop at their own pace. When they're ready, they'll let you know. I've never fretted about milestones, because every child is different, but I have celebrated every little thing. Because they do grow up so quickly, and my baby doesn't want to called that anymore!

(Toddler Tales are snippets of what I'm learning every day from my little one.)

This is in my near future, for sure! My son is 20 months and still doesn't mind being called a baby, but the end is probably near. Cue the tears!

Oh my word they just get independent so quickly don't they. What a lovely post, so great to remember what he's doing. Well done with the potty training too, always such fun! Love the photo! #whatsthestory

Ah! I know what you mean - my littlest has started saying the odd word and I am loving his little 'Can Ku' when he's given anything (thank you). But it all does seem to have whizzed by in a rush when you look back on it. So sweet that he got to celebrate - 2 birthdays - just like the Queen! #whatsthestory

That's so sweet. Most of the time Monkey will tell me he's a big boy now, but sometimes I'm still allowed to call him my baby! #magicmoments

They all get that idea in their hands, but we moms can't help ourselves, can we?!

My 7yo informed me this week that I wasn't allowed to hug him or stroke his face anymore...! It's lovely experiencing each new stage, but it really does all go to fast x

That's boys for you! Whatever their age, kids do catch us by surprise, don't they?

It truly is wonderful that your son is passing all his milestones, really thrilled for you. I have a friend who has moved from South Africa to Dubai in order to access autism services for her son. She also enjoys living there.

It's nice to know that your friend has found the right support for her son here. Thanks for stopping by!
