15 questions your About page should answer

You only need to glance at your blog stats to see that your About section is one of your most visited pages. Anyone who visits your site naturally wants to know more about you, and your About page can have a significant impact on building a regular readership base. It's important to use that space wisely and give it everything you've got, because, why not? It makes sense to introduce yourself well if you want your blog to be taken seriously.

I have compiled a checklist of questions that should help you create a good About page:

15 questions your About page should answer

1. Who are you?

Start with your name! You'd be surprised to know how many people actually forget to put their name in their introduction. You could sign off with it, but it's a good idea to mention it early on. In the first few lines, establish who you are. This text could be similar to the mini-introduction you have on your home page (if you don't have one, create it now!). In other words, summarise who you are. Don't forget to add your best photo. Readers like a face to the name!

2. Where do you stay?

Your geographic location helps your readers put your language and cultural references into context. I think it's important to mention where you stay, and sadly, many bloggers don't bother to. If you are staying away from your home country, you can talk about where you came from. It will only make your introduction more interesting.

3. What are your credentials?

You don't have to mention your college degree (although you can, and should if you write research posts). You need to establish why you are qualified to write about a certain subject. It could be your work experience which helps you write about certain topics. It could also be something as simple as becoming a parent, like in my case!

4. Who is in your family?

It only makes you more human to share a little about your family (whether it's about your parents, siblings, or your spouse and kids). It's up to you how much in detail you want to write about them. Share a few family photos too, if you like.

5. Why did you start blogging?

The answer to this question can be very interesting, and unique - so don't skip it!

6. Why do you blog?

In other words, what's your purpose? Your blog could be a journal, a community, or a resource. Share your passion and your objectives as a blogger.

7. What's special about your blog?

This may not be a straightforward question to answer. It's hard to be special among a gazillion blogs even in a niche. Don't fret this one - just let your sincerity show through, and show your readers how you see the world through your eyes.

8. What is your blog about?

In my post on efficient blogging, I talked about choosing a few blogging categories that you will focus on. Tell your readers what they are. It may sometimes be hard for readers to establish what exactly you blog about by just looking at a few entries. Tell them clearly what the scope of your blog is.

9. What are your best posts?

This is such a simple thing to do, yet forgotten by many bloggers. Share a few (and few being the operating word) of your favourite posts with your readers. Make sure they also demonstrate the variety of topics you write about.

10. What are your accomplishments?

This is the place to show off your awards, media mentions, and wherever you have been featured. Don't worry if you don't have much to display. You can also mention nominations, and posts that went viral. Even easier, share your published guest posts. If you are a new blogger, guest posts are a great way to get yourself noticed - here are some tips I previously shared on writing guest posts.

11. How are you a part of the community?

Talk about blogging or other communities or groups you are part of. If you moderate some, mention them too. Readers would also like to know if you are connected with social causes.

12. Are you open to sponsorships?

You may have a separate page for brands, but even companies will visit your About page first. Briefly mention your willingness (or not) to work with them.

13. How can we connect on social media?

Add this even if you have sidebar icons! Going with the flow of your introduction, visitors are more likely to follow you here.

14. How do I subscribe to your newsletter?

Again, this is something overlooked often. There's nothing wrong with adding a subscribe box or a link to your newsletter on your About page. Like with social media, you will probably get more subscribers on this page.

15. How can I contact you?

Yes, even if you have a contact page. At least share your email address so people can quickly contact you without having to go to another page.

All these questions may not work for your blog. Pick and choose what you want your readers to know about you, and make your About page a handshake they'll remember!

Share your tips! What are the things you look for in a blog's About page?

I smiled when I read this because I only do the last 3 points in my about section, but that is the way I prefer it! I do agree though, it is nicer to read a blog when you feel you know them a little through their photo etc- but for the time being I'm going to keep mine the way it is :-)

Amelia, when I started out, I was like that too. At some point, I decided to 'come out' and give it all I've got! Do what works for you, always :)
