30 Things To Do Before You Have Kids

Yes, children are real joys, and I'm saying this because I mean it. And don't you doubt that for a second! But I still have these moments where I think what I could do if I wasn't in charge of a little one. They are fleeting moments but they do come to me. Hence, this list of things to do before you have kids.

But first, a caveat: if you don't have kids yet, or are expecting, don't be disheartened. Parents can choose to do whatever they put their mind to, after careful planning of course. If you're like me, you just think about what else you could be doing and give up on the idea of getting dressed and getting out of the house. If you're already a parent with young kids, I would be really happy to know if you've accomplished a few things on this list. Because you are my new hero!

30 Things To Do Before You Have Kids

30 Things To Do Before You Have Kids:

1. Wear white clothes, and pastels. Basically, any colour that hasn't been picked for the sole purpose of hiding food stains.

2. Sleep. Lots. Like, lots. Whenever you can. Wherever you can.

3. Take a long shower without any interruptions, like frantic banging on the door. Unless it's open, in which case, without an audience.

4. Read a book in two days. Not in two months, in which you have to start over again every time you pick it up.

5. Watch an entire season of Friends or your favourite classic show. Again.

6. Spend an elaborate amount of time deciding what to wear, making sure it is perfectly coordinated.

7. Travel like an adventurer. Without a care in the world.

8. Eat a seven-course meal in a fine dining restaurant.

9. Go backpacking. Seriously, you'll never be able to travel with just a backpack again.

10. Eat chocolate in the open. No hiding behind kitchen cabinets.

11. Go for a weekend trip you've planned only a hour ago.

12. Go window shopping. Just like that.

13. Try out 18 different outfits before buying one.

14. Have a proper phone conversation, with no screaming in the background.

15. Do that certificate course you've always wanted to.

16. Wear yoga pants only when doing yoga.

17. Be lovey-dovey with your other half, like, whenever.

18. Catch up with your bestie for a breakfast meet. Impromptu.

19. Party hard. All night.

20. Wear heels, and different ones for each outfit. Not the same ones that are secretly comfortable.

21. Watch TV shows in real time.

22. Go on a second (or third) honeymoon.

23. Go to the beach and just laze around all day.

24. Have a weekend which does not involve grocery shopping.

25. Cook an elaborate meal just because you feel like it. Not because there's a hungry hoard outside the kitchen door.

26. Catch a late movie show, without incessant calls from a babysitter.

27. Have carefully manicured nails, and wear make up. Every day.

28. Have a haircut more than  twice a year, and in a style which isn't low maintenance.

29. Have an adult conversation that doesn't involve diapers or school.

30. Put something other than kiddie birthday parties and PTA meets on your calendar.

Tell me! What do you wish you had done before you had kids?

Oh yes to ALL! I wish my husband and I traveled a lot before we had kids, now traveling without them causes a lot of guilt and I don't enjoy as much as I want to because I constantly worry about the kids!

Hahaha great list. I would love to just fly off to Paris for the weekend or something similar. Ahh to be spontaneous for a bit again!

Since we have a toddler, we have to really plan our travel, and it takes a lot of work to organise a trip!

I know, right? Have no idea when it will happen again.

Love this list it's brilliant, who knew you would miss the 'stressful' days of Having 'nothing' to wear, changing a hundred times before you go out!!! High heels.....how I miss them!

Fabulous list, and all so true! I often wonder what I actually did with all that time I had before Joe came along.

I remember when I was pregnant with our first, one of our best friends gave us 2 instructions...see as many movies as we could and sleep as late as we wanted. She was so right!-Ashley

Great post tarana, i wish i did half of all you said here, but i didn't, whenever i see a newly married couple, i always tell the wife, go out more, have fun more, go to your favorite restaurant as many times as you want, go see a movie, go to the beach, malls etc..Force your hubby to take you out more. spend every minute you have with your spouse because when baby comes, there will be little or no time for those anymore. i guess it is a sacrifice we'll have to make for the rest of our lives.

Great list, lol. Rest assured there will come a day when you can do all these things again :)

These are lovely. May I ask, did you make these up yourself? I ask because I've seen lists liek this float aroudn the Internet. Doesn't matter if you got it. from somewhere. I may go on that lovely week-end trip in #11 this week-end. It's good to know the positives about childless life (I will not have kids due to circumstance).

So true, and like I said, I only have one pair of comfortable heels!

Wise words, those!

It's a beautiful sacrifice, though, isn't it?!

Tarana said...

I'm sure, but I don't want him to grow up too fast either!

Tarana said...

Ah no, it's mine! But yes, I can imagine if you found something like this, it's all a shared experience. Thanks for stopping by!

So true! We had a less than 48 hour honeymoon. Someday we will go on a properly romantic trip together...

All true!! Didn't get to do any of the above while bringing my daughters up.

HA! I love all of these! I can't remember the last time I did most of them, especially 3, 4, 14, and 21. Although I'm pretty sure I never did #11 - I'm such a planner!

Tarana said...

I hope you find the time for it!

What a great list! Going to the beach and lounging around all day was one I really relate to - we took my son to the beach for his birthday and it was awesome but I didn't read a single sentence in the book I brought and it was not relaxing. Fun, yes. Wonderful, yes. Lazy? HAHAHAH. Ahhhh white clothing. I scheduled this to pin too!

Tarana said...

Book reading at the beach? Fat chance, huh! Thanks for sharing this too.

Okay so I'm not even sure how but I've managed the adult conversation. It did feel odd, but I did it... Go me ;) #ShareWithMe

Great list. I am pretty sure that I did most of them many years ago. The thought of reading a book in 2 days now would be a total joy, and a total fantasy for that matter. #sharewithme

Fantastic list and I won't admit that I have done most of that on the list only because I got extremely lucky that both my kids still take two hour naps and sleep from 7 pm to 8 am so I get a lot of time as they are still young. But I can imagine all this will fade quickly as they get older and there are no more naps. lol But nevertheless great list. Love your posts as always. Thanks for linking up each week and the continual blog support. #sharewithme

So much of this is true - how I miss the spontaneity of pre-children days....

Kelly Sage said...

I would have traveled a lot more- and not to see family!

This post made me nostalgic for the days pre-kids. Reading a book in two days sounds HEAVENLY! My husband and I made it a goal to go to Europe before kids, and we did that. YAY! SO worth it. Now that just seems like a dream. :)

OHMYGOSH I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!! I can't pin it! It says the image is too small and I want to pin it soooo badly!!

Chris Carter said...

Okay- so I figured out that you have to pin from your left sidebar to get options of your images... If I try to pin it from the button following your post? Only one image that is too small. Just fyi!!

Tarana said...

So glad you liked the post! I'll have to see what's wrong with the buttons. In any case, you could re-pin from here as well: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/254171972695256682/

Love this and agree... I would add to the list but I became a mom at the age of 17 so my I could probably fill up a book! Haha

Tarana said...

Oh, then, you really must have a book worth of experiences!
