Family Eats: Arabic delights at The Gallery, BurJuman Arjaan

The Bur Dubai area is brimming with places to eat, most of them serving street food menus. The place is one of the busiest in Dubai and restaurants are always busy. If you crave a more refined dining experience, head down to BurJuman Arjaan by Rotana.

These luxury hotel apartments feature a restaurant called The Gallery, serving international cuisine. We visited them for dinner recently, and liked the ambiance. It was a week day, so not many diners were around. This helped us appreciate their wood-floored interiors and soft lighting.

While The Gallery serves international cuisine, we discovered that their specialty lies in Middle Eastern cuisine. Most of their menu items feature Arabic grills and side dishes. We started with the Couscous Tabbouleh with Crisp Romaine. It had a great mix of flavours, and a squeeze of lemon on top gave it the right zesty flavour. I accompanied this with a Virgin Margarita.

The other starter dish we ordered was the Oriental mezze. This consisted of hummus, moutabel, tabbouleh, kibbeh, fatayer, stuffed vine leaves, and Arabic bread. We were pleased that the taste of these freshly made hot and cold mezze items was authentic. The kibbeh (stuffed meat in wheat coating) was especially good.

The restaurant has a good selection of dishes for kids. There isn't a combo meal option, but you can select from main dishes, beverages, and desserts. For Little Dude, we simply ordered the Fish fingers and fries.

Our main course was the Oriental mixed grill, which included grilled kofta, lamb kebab, shish taouk, and lamb chops. The meat was perfectly cooked, and the Arabic spices gave it an authentic taste. This platter was flawless that way.

To complement the mixed grill, we had the Vegetable Biryani. Being a biryani lover, this dish didn't quite excite my taste buds. The rice was well made, but the spices could have been more enhanced. I also missed having an accompanying chutney or yogurt with it.

We were quite full after the meat and rice, but did want to taste some of their desserts. I had the Toblerone Chocolate Cheese Cake, which I was expecting to be light and creamy as cheesecakes are. Instead, it was more like a fudge cake with rich chocolate. It was delicious, nevertheless.

My husband and son shared the 'Make Your Own' Ice Cream Sundae - vanilla ice cream topped with M&Ms, cookies, and caramel sauce. This was, of course, a winner!

We had a great meal in all, and would definitely drop in again for their Arabic cuisine. I would recommend The Gallery as a good option for a family meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

BurJuman Arjaan by Rotana is located next to the BurJuman Centre, and is also accessible from the S3 level of the shopping mall.

We were invited to review The Gallery, but all views and opinions are my own.
