Family Eats: Dining by the beach at Fujairah Rotana

When we visited Fujairah Rotana Resort & Spa for a weekend getaway (read my review here) a few weeks ago, we had some lovely food at their beach side restaurants. The weather was on our side, and it was hard to get away from the sea breeze and the crashing waves. So, it was just perfect that we had our main meals right next to the beach.

Our lunch was at the Sharkeys Bar. Sitting at this open air restaurant, you are merely a stone's throw away from the sea. The menu features salads, sandwiches, and light meals. Drinks include both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages such as fresh juices and mocktails.

I ordered myself a Sharkey's Salad to begin with. Brie cheese was the highlight of this salad, and it was creamy and flavourful. The bean sprouts, cherry tomatoes, and lettuce in vinaigrette dressing was a good accompaniment to the cheese.

My husband had the Chicken Ceasar Salad and liked the mild seasoning of the grilled chicken atop the salad leaves. The crispy garlic bread served with it tasted good too.

Little Dude had Chicken Burger and Chicken Nuggets with fries from the kids menu. These items are actually ordered separately but our server was kind enough to make this platter for him with smaller portions. He had some fresh pineapple juice to go with it.

For the main course, my husband and I decided to share the Rotana Burger, since we didn't want to have a heavy meal with the rest of the day ahead of us. We're glad we did, as the burger was huge! While it was a simple burger of fresh grilled beef patty with tomatoes and lettuce, the freshness of the ingredients made it delicious.

For dinner, we headed to Waves Beach Restaurant, also by the beach. This time we chose an indoor table as it was getting quite windy. This restaurant has a cozy ambiance - you could talk and dine the night away with friends here. The staff is also very attentive to families, and Little Dude was given crayons and a colouring sheet.

While the restaurant has been modeled after a beach hut, the seating is quite comfortable - both indoors and out. The open kitchen view gives it a nice vibe, with flavours drifting in while you wait for your food.

The menu is a different story, and there are quite a few dishes to suit every palate. Featured in it are beef steaks, pasta, and of course, fish - including tiger prawns, squid, and mussels. There is a nice selection of salads too, and soups to start your meal with.

We ordered him Fish Fingers with fries, and a Chocolate Banana milkshake. He liked the crispy meal, and declared he was full after having only a few! He then asked for a scoop of ice cream, which was quickly served with chocolate sauce.

I had the Blue Cheese Gnocchi to begin with, a warm pasta dish served with grilled vegetables and sage form. The creamy foam had an agreeable taste, just right for the strong flavour of the blue cheese.

My husband skipped a starter and ordered Indian Chicken Makhanwala for the main course. It was served with favourite Indian condiments - papad pickle, and yogurt. The buttery chicken was tender and delicious with the thick tomato sauce.

I had the Arabic Hammour Fillet, which was perfectly grilled in Arabic spices. The fish was fresh as one would expect at a beach side restaurant. It was served with vermicelli rice and dry lime butter sauce.

For desserts, we had the Tiramisu and Trio of Dessert (chocolate brownie, strawberry mousse, and Arabic pudding). Both did not disappoint, and ended the meal at a sweet note.

Sharkeys Bar is open from 12 PM to 12 AM (1 AM on Friday and Saturday) at Fujairah Rotana Resort and Spa at Al Aqah Beach. Waves Beach Restaurant is open from 7 PM to 10.30 PM (11 PM on Friday and Saturday). For details and more dining options, visit the Fujairah Rotana website.

We were invited to visit Fujairah Rotana's dining outlets, but all views and opinions are my own.
