Family Eats: Al Fresco Friday Brunch at Media Rotana, Dubai

This is the most inviting time of the year in Dubai, and two things that really go well together when you're outdoors are pool and brunch! That's how the Friday Brunch goes at Media Rotana, Dubai. It's hosted at The Terrace, their outdoor lounge and bar. There's a pool right next to it, and guests arriving for the brunch get free access.

The brunch is spread out over a big area, with shaded seating. There were air coolers set up when we went, as it was still a little warm. Shisha is also served at this brunch, but we asked for a seat where there would be no smoking. We ordered juice, and I went to explore the food on offer. We skipped the use of the pool that day, but it looked like many families were having fun in the water. I guess it's a good way to keep kids happy!

Cuisines on offer

The selection of salads was good - with Arabic cold mezze, fresh seafood like clams and crab, sushi, and vegetarian and meat salads. There were various food stations with live cooking. Each station was decorated with cultural symbols of the country the cuisine was from. There was Indian food with barbecue, biryani, and freshly made parathas. It's also nice to see some dishes being made fresh, and you can have them cooked how you like.

The Italian food included fresh pasta your way, and baked casserole. The Mexican station had fajitas, chili, and guacamole. The Arabic food section had hot mezze, dawood basha (meatball curry), shawarma, and a variety of meat and fish items. I think the range of food in the Arabic cuisine was the most impressive.

At the live barbecue station, there was steak, kebabs, chicken, and fish. I tried the kebabs and chicken, and they were well cooked, served with sauces, potatoes, and corn on the cob.

Fun for kids

Apart from the pool, there's also a little play space for kids. They can play in the bouncy castle, and there are some little tables too, where they can presumably eat if they want to. You have to supervise the kids yourself, though. They do not have any other activities as of now, so you could carry along something for them to play with, or ask the staff. They do have the Flippers Kids Club at Media Rotana, but for the brunch, all kids play is only organized outside.

The desserts

Among the notable items in desserts on their brunch menu, there was apple pie, and berry crumble. There are, of course, many cakes and parfaits too. I also tried the crepe station, and had a delicious banana and chocolate crepe.

What we liked, and would have liked!

It's outdoor, so that's fantastic for any brunch this time of the year. The pool is another attractive factor, and we'd love to use it the next time we're there. The food was pretty good, and you'd definitely find something on the menu that you'll like. It would have been great if there was some kind  of activity to keep the kids occupied, and perhaps a few dishes made especially for them. Overall, the brunch is great for families and others alike. They have some music from their DJ as well so the ambiance is good.
