Do you know the basics of first aid for your kids?

It's human nature to avoid thinking of things that make us sad or uncomfortable. The mere thought of our kids getting hurt can set our hearts racing. But the fact is, accidents happen. Especially with kids, who don't know any better.

You may know the drill with cuts, bites, burns, and small injuries. But bigger accidents can happen within the confines of the home, requiring medical assistance. In such situations, the right action while you wait for medics can make a huge difference to your child's life.

I recently took a Pediatric First Aid Course, along with a few other parents, at Health & Safety Solutions (HSS) in Dubai, and it has enlightened me in many ways. It has opened my eyes to the dangers that might be around my child. We were warned about not panicking and learning to deal with situations with the right knowledge and skills.

Our instructor, Remus, taught us many life-saving skills such as CPR, which needs to be performed in case of breathing obstructions. We learned how to perform CPR on infants, older kids, and adults. This is one skill I think every parent should possess.

Our course also covered first aid for choking, another accident that can prove fatal if not instantly dealt with. Apart from the hands on skills that we learned, Remus also discussed common injuries, and the best way to treat them.

We were also provided with a booklet which covers important topics such as Burns and scalds, Poisoning, Allergies & anaphylactic shock, Head injuries, Epilepsy, Asthma, and Diabetes.

The team at HSS, founded by Annie Browne, are very passionate about making parents, nannies, and caretakers in daycare and schools aware of the importance of first aid training. They're also compliant with international and Middle East safety regulations.

I'm glad to have been equipped with basic first aid knowledge after this course, and at least have more confidence to deal with emergencies. I believe a first aid course shouldn't be optional, but mandatory for all parents.

At only AED 350, the Back To Basics First Aid Course at HSS is worth every Dirham. The course is conducted on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1-5pm and on Saturdays, 8am-12pm and 1-5pm at their Business Bay training facility in Dubai.  Parents can host group courses, of six or more, in their home.

To make a booking, call HSS on 04-3689980, or visit their website for details.

I was invited to attend the first aid course at HSS, but all views and opinions are sincerely my own.
