Prenatal pampering at SensAsia Urban Spa (Review)

Pregnancy has a way of leaving you feeling very drained and exhausted. Naturally, this is a great time to get pampered, to keep you going, especially when you have an active preschooler to take care of! It was with this rejuvenation in mind that I decided to visit SensAsia Urban Spa at Souk Al Manzil, Downtown Dubai.

I had booked a Mummy Massage And More treatment, which lasts two hours. One hour is for a special prenatal massage, and the second hour is for a Eve Lom Ultimate Cleanse facial. This was just the kind of pampering I needed. My body was tired, and I had been neglecting my face a little. Not to mention, my combination skin now is dry and sensitive thanks to the pregnancy hormones.

SensAsia Urban Spa has dark and lavendar interiors, a cool relief from the hot sun outside. They mainly use Elemis and Eve Lom facial products, but also offer Dr. Dennis Gross and Mama Mio. And then there are a range of massage treatments suited for everyone.

They have a range of SensMama treatments for both prenatal and post-natal care, including one which also includes the Daddy-to-be!

My therapist for the day was Nid, a soft-spoken and clearly well-experienced person I felt comfortable with instantly. As recommended, I got there 15 minutes prior to my appointment to fill in the forms and talk about my requirements. She then showed me to the changing room. I must say I loved the dressing gown! It wasn't the usual terrycot bath robe, but a cotton gown with soft lining.

The treatment room was small, but adequate for the job, I guess. I was placed in a position most comfortable for my state. With a towel under by feet, I was asked to lay on my side. I was also given a rolled towel to wrap my arms around. I felt as comfortable as a baby!

Nid was firm with her hands. She slowly massaged my back, followed by my thighs and feet, and then my arms. She repeated the process on the other side.

There were three kinds of essential oils used for this massage - relaxation oils, oils to reduce stretch marks, and oils to reduce water retention, a common problem in pregnancy.

I was asked to lay on my back for the last part of the massage, Now, this isn't the most comfortable position during pregnancy, so I asked for my back to be raised just right so I could stay on my back. Nid then massaged my shoulders.

After the massage, she began my facial. This is also done on your back so it's best to choose an angle you are most comfortable with. Eve Lom facial products are renowned worldwide, and this brand is over 25 years old.

After cleaning my face, Nid applied paraffin wax in layers on my face. It was slightly warm and dried quickly. After she peeled off the wax, she spent a good time extracting impurities and clogged pores (I did say my skin was neglected!). I was happy with how carefully she performed this part.

Next, a mask was applied to my face, its main ingredient being camphor. She asked me if the fragrance of the mask bothered me, but it didn't. After the mask was cleaned off, a hydrating serum was applied. My skin felt amazingly soft and clean!

In fact, my treatment went a little over two hours, and it impressed me that they were so dedicated to getting the job well done.

It had never occurred to me to get a prenatal pampering session during my last pregnancy, and now I'm sold! Every mom to be deserves to have this kind of care.

The Mummy Massage and More treatment costs AED 699 and lasts 2 hours. Check out the SensAsia Urban Spa website for details on all their treatments. You can make a booking online, or by calling one of their outlets. Apart from Downtown Dubai, they have spas in The Village, Palm Jumeirah, and Emirates Golf Club.

I was invited to experience this spa treatment for the purpose of review, but all views and opinions are sincerely my own.
